A few miles from Montepulciano stands Pienza, a rare example of Renaissance town in the heart of Val d’Orcia.  Director Franco Zeffirelli used the romantic town as the film set for Romeo and Julliet.
The centre of Pienza was completely redesigned by Pope Pius II, supported by architect Bernardo Rossellino in 1459. This new vision of urban space was realized in the superb square known as Piazza Pio II and the buildings around it: the Piccolomini Palace, the Borgia Palace and the Duomo where Renaissance and Gothic styles are fused.

Montalcino is a pretty village, where prevails the Roman – Gothic architecture, dominated by the 14th century Medicean Fortress which has an Enoteca (wine shop) offering on sale almost all the best representative Brunello of the area.
Vineyards are planted mainly with Sangiovese grosso clone of sangiovese, locally named as Brunello. Ferruccio Biondi–Santi who understood the potential aging of sangiovese grosso apt to obtain a full structured and bodied wine put the history of Brunello counts about 150 years, the beginning of it.
In Montalcino the Family Biondi-Santi together with other pioneers such as the families Cinelli-Colombini, Costanti and Mariani, have continued the production and have been joined during the 70s and 80s by many other vintners.
Nowadays the “golden hill” thanks to its terroir, good weather conditions and enormous amount of capital invested, represents the most successful reality in the Italian wine making industry.
Brunello – the crème de la crème of Italian winemaking - truly shows its potential: marvelous elegance together with excellent power and concentration of taste and aroma, with spicy hints Brunello never intends to be “a light drink”.

Montepulciano is an ancient Etruscan settlement, turned in to a fortified village in the Middle Ages and encircled by walls and fortifications designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder in 1511 during the Medici rule. The town has an unusually harmonious look, the main square with the Duomo; the elegant Palazzo de' Nobili-Tauragi, the austere Palazzo Comunale and the stunning Renaissance Church San Biagio are a must to see.
The town is well known for the production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, another son of Sangiovese grape locally called Prugnolo Gentile, a ruby full-bodied red.
The Vino Nobile, is a vibrant intense ruby red, with a rich fruit nose of cherry and raspberry.
