DESCRIPTION:
The Rome Borghese Gallery is surrounded form the most important green space of the town of Rome: Villa Borghese. More than 70 hectares of park, a large number of minor building, the Villa Borghese park include the Pincio area, where a large balcony overlooks Piazza del Popolo and in the distance you can see the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.
In your tour, the expert guide will explain about the history of Cardinal Scipione Borghese that was particularly interested on the work of arts of Caravaggio and Bernini: in the walking tour through the various rooms of the Borghese Gallery you can see among the others David with the Head of Goliath and St. John the Baptist in the desert of Caravaggio; the David and Apollo and Daphne of Bernini. The large collection include also: Pauline Bonaparte of Canova, the Last Judgement, Ascension and Pentecost of Beato Angelico, the Flagellation of Piero della Francesca and many others.

This basilica was first built in 432-440 to house the relic of the chains that bound Saint Peter when he was imprisoned in Jerusalem. According to legend, the Empress Eudoxia (wife of Emperor Valentinian III) gifted the chains to Pope Leo I. While he compared them to the chains of St. Peter’s final imprisonment in the Mamertine Prison in Rome, the two chains miraculously fused together. The chains are kept in a reliquary under the main altar in the basilica.
